Anil Kumar Singh is a popular name in the performing arts circuit, both nationally and internationally. He has done over 1000 shows in his decade long career and still continues to do so. Our team recently had the chance to catch up with Anil Kumar Singh at his office where he is preparing for his upcoming shows. We requested him for a candid interview and he happily obliged to take out time for us from his busy schedule.
Anil Kumar Singh has also been a successful entrepreneur along with being a passionate performing artist. He has been a regular performer in the prestigious Kala Ghoda Art festival. He has also been associated with multiple preforming arts festivals across India. The recent one being Evam festival 2018, taking place in February.
Anil Kumar Singh has very respected credentials. He is a Visharad in Bharat Natyam from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharav Mahavidyalaya Mandal , Miraj, under the tutelage of Late Guru Shri Jatinder Pal Bansal. Anil is also the Member Of International Dance Council , CID.
His deep understanding of Indian traditions and mythology and practical exposure, through his Guru Dr. Tushar Guha, has helped him to perform many mythological characters like – the famous character of Arjuna (Chitrangada/ A Dance Drama of Rabindra Nath Tagore), Lord Rama (Geet Ramayana), Vaalmiki (Vaalmiki Pratibha/ Rabindra Nath Tagore’s Dance Drama.), Mayar Khela (Rabindra Nath Tagore’s Dance Drama) & Indian Folk Dances. Anil Kumar Singh has also performed at various international festivals such as – performances for “India India Verien Festival”- Switzerland, ITB Berline and many other performances.
Very few people know that Anil Kumar Singh is a professional actor too. To understand the art of acting in a better manner he has learnt Acting in person from the veteran actor Anupam Kher . Anil’s experience as an actor and his past experience of dance, dance dramas and bandish of classical dances has helped him in understanding the highlights and peculiarities of performances done by him. Today, he builds his choreography and characters with this very understanding and distinction. He has also undergone training into North Indian dance form – Kathak along with basics of Classical Western dance forms – Cha Chaa, Foxtrot, Jive and Ballroom.
Like we mentioned earlier, it was an honour for us to interview such a personality. These are excerpts from his hour long interview that we conducted.
WHAT PROJECTS YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I have been invited to perform in Mumbai Fest wherein I will be presenting a Rabindrik style of dance presentation “Aanondo” with my Guru Shri Dr. Tushar Guha & Nrityanjali’s eminent artists. Apart from this I will be doing a Folk Dance presentation, Hum Ek Hain, with Guru Shri Dr Tushar Guha, Nrityanjali at Tata Theater, NCPA in the second week of January. I also have been invited to present a solo & duet classical Bharatnatyam dance at Bikaner Desert Art & Literature Fest in February. I am also collaborating with few Dance Companies in U.S, Germany and a few other countries to have a wide cultural exchange programme since they have approached me after watching my classical & folk dance performances in India, Switzerland, ITB Berlin and Italy.
WHICH CELEBRITY PERFORMING ARTIST YOU BELIEVE ARE THE MOST INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR FIELD? WHY?
There are many refined artist in performing arts field but I forget myself when I watch the national excellence awardee who is also jewel of India , Bharatnatyam Pioneer Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan Ji, & also Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee for Dance – Kathak Pandit Birju Maharaj Ji.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NOT WORKING?
Performing arts is a field of being involved in creativity round the clock because an artist after a point of time forgets Self also in a bid to to create something good. I mean “ I” never get free or do nothing but Yes whenever possible I do spend some quality time with My daughter, My wife & My Parents by going out with them, discussing with them about something constructive because they are the biggest source of motivation & inspiration for me apart from My Guru, Friends, Relatives & Well wishers.
WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WILL BE AFTER 25 YEARS?
(Laughs) Good question but honestly I have not set any parameters for me after 25 years but Yes I wish to make my parents, my wife, my daughter, my guru, my friends, my relatives, my well-wishers feel proud & happy to see me at a fame where people love Me as “A person & the artist in me” by their standing ovation with open heart.
WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION?
A loving positive aura of a nice human being, The hands of so many excellent Painting & Skilled Portrait Sculpture Artist who paints or makes beautiful statue of God/Goddess, Person, Nature etc, The creative minds of every performing artist. All of these are my humble Inspirations
WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD THEME SONG FOR YOUR LIFE?
“Tinka Tinka Jara Jara Hai Roshni Se Jaise Bara…” song from movie Karam 2005 turns me to relate my life with it. (Smiles)
WHATS THAT 1 THING THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Omg! there are so many things yet left that people should know about me & you are asking only one thing…(Laughs)..Anyways As my Guru Shri Dr Tushar Guha Ji Says that Every Person has a person within with an unseen curtain which nobody should cross or its not required to be known. For that matter no even to your life partner & I believe in this philosophy.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUNG AND UPCOMING PERFORMING ARTISTS?
“Tha Fact that there is an immense pleasure & contentment that I get within & it moves me to become one with the art that I love, perform & it also helps me to nurture, add-on to make performing arts prospectus wider & interesting for the mass. I feel there is an Art in every human being & one must explore it, polish it with the help of the dignitary & become one with it & trust me the world will become much better place to live.”
