GeekWire Calendar Picks: Get curious about making games; GeekWire’s Playbook series; and more

For many people, games are more than just a fun past time. From cutting-edge virtual reality games to some old-fashioned live-action roleplaying, games are a way to learn about the world around us and even come to grips with advanced technology.

Seattle’s Pacific Science Center is encouraging the entire Puget Sound region to get curious about games with a full weekend of game-themed exhibitions and activities. From July 13 to 15, the center will be taken over by local game creators, interactive puzzle rooms and even scientists who study games and their effect.

The event is family friendly and encourages fun for every age. Organizations like Seattle Indies and the University of Washington Center for Game Science will host activities throughout the weekend, like beta testing virtual reality games, a coding workshop for aspiring game makers and even learning about the theory behind how games make us feel.

See the Pacific Science Center website for more details on the exhibitions and tickets. This event is part of the Center’s monthly Curiosity Days series.

That’s one of the highlights from our GeekWire community calendar, the spot for geek and tech events in Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest. See the full calendar here, submit your event here and keep reading for more suggested events over the next few weeks.

AWC: The insider track to working at Amazon, Tableau, Chef and Zillow

What: “AWC, Amazon Bound, Chef, Tableau and Zillow are excited to present a facilitated panel discussion taking an intimate look at working at Amazon, Tableau, Chef and Zillow. During this event we will explore how these local, sought-after companies differentiate themselves in how they recruit, what they look for during the interview, how best to prepare for an interview or a role at one of these firms, desired “hard” and “soft” skills, company culture and what it takes to not only be successful as a team member, but also, what will help you rise to the top of the resume pile when seeking a role with one of these companies. This is a very special event, providing an “insider” perspective of each of these companies. Although this is not a traditional “career fair”, we will have recruiters and representatives from the firms with us that evening to share their experiences and discuss open roles.”
